Our signature chocolate chip cookies
Welcome to our cozy farm kitchen! This beloved recipe started from a simple chocolate chip bag, but after many batches of learning homemaking as we go, we turned dry, thick dough into the ultimate soft, chewy, and golden-edged treat. Discover the story, our melt-the-butter shortcut, and how to bake your own batch at home.
From a store-bought bag to a kitchen favorite
Originally, this was just an everyday recipe printed on the back of a chocolate chip bag given to us. But thick, dry, cakey cookies just were not my style. I wanted a cookie that was thinner, decadent, and incredibly tender. Through lots of trial and error in my kitchen, I adjusted the measurements until I found the sweet spot. Now, my coworkers ask for a fresh batch every single time there is a food day at work!
Crisp golden edges with rich, gooey centers
The perfect cookie bite is all about contrast. You get slightly crisp, golden edges that frame a soft, delightfully chewy center packed with big chunks of melty chocolate. Because learning homemaking is all about adapting, I never remember to set butter out on the counter to soften in advance. Melting the butter became my staple method, and with just a little practice balancing the flour, it yields that heavenly chewy texture every single bake.
Bake the recipe
Yields: 2 dozen cookies
Ingredients:
- 1 1/8 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, melted
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/3 cup white sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup chocolate chunks
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
-
In a bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
-
In a separate bowl, mix the butter with the brown and white sugars until combined.
-
Add the vanilla and eggs, mixing on low speed until everything is incorporated.
-
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
-
Chop your favorite melting chocolate blocks into small chunks and fold them into the cookie dough.
-
Check your dough's consistency. It should be thick and slightly sticky. If it's too wet or loose, add a little flour at a time until it reaches the right consistency.
-
Scoop the dough into tablespoon-sized balls and place them on a baking sheet.
-
Bake for about 8 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown adding time as needed. The centers may still look a little soft—that's okay! Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them.
